Facebook domination

Posted on July 31st, 2007 in Other by Warren

I must say, I am a frequent user of facebook. The marketplace app is just insane - its virtually eliminated my need for Craigslist.  Although the demographics for facebook are still focused on age 18-25 range, they are expanding fast into the highschool and older crowd as well.  Just how insane is facebook? here’s some interesting facebook statsIPO in 2009?

Fountain of Youth Pills

Posted on July 30th, 2007 in Random Stuff by Warren

This company is doing clinical trials for pills that they claim will extend your life. Here’s how it works.

So thats an awfully ambitious claim they are making. What happens if you don’t live till 100? Say you die at 75…will the company be liable for it?

The whole biotech/pharmaceuticals thing is just so complicated…theres so many more obstacles (lawsuits, FDA regulation…) that don’t exist for conventional startups i.e. high tech.  99% effective is just not good enough in this industry..

Top Entrepreneurs Under 30

Posted on July 27th, 2007 in Entrepreneurship by Warren

Here’s a list of the top entrepreneurs under 30. Remarkable people.. I actually met #9 on the list a few weeks ago.

#9: Raj Lahoti, ONLINE GURU
Age: 25
Location: San Diego
2006
Revenue: $11.5 million
Employees: 15
Year founded: 2003
What it does: After a few years dabbling in Internet domain acquisition and traffic brokering, Raj Lahoti set out to build up one of his brother’s domains in order to provide meaningful content in an area that, well, generally lacks it. DMV.ORG, the “Online Unofficial Guide to the DMV,” aggregates information from the (often dreaded) Department of Motor Vehicles in each state — all in one place. Users can access information on everything from applying for a license to ordering a driving record, without the aggravation of standing in the DMV’s endless lines.

I had no idea he was such a big deal. He was obviously bright, ambitious and very articulate, but some people may feel that he might be a little arrogant and cocky. I guess $11.5M in revenue at 25 just might do that to you? Dot com kids these days…..

Cornell MBA

I met an alumni of Cornell’s one year MBA program. It’s designed for people with advanced degrees like PhDs and Master’s, etc.   Here’s a quick comparison between the 1 and 2 year programs.

1-2 Compare

On the surface it looks good, save yourself one year of tuition and opportunity cost (~$100k+), and get the same degree those suckers doing the 2 year program get…right?
But after thinking about it some more… a one year program, while efficient for older people who simply need to get an extra degree (avg age 29), is probably not the best for someone like me (age 23).   Think about it, the day you step on campus you will need to start recruiting for a full time job.  On top of that, you’ll be bogged down by 2 years of coursework thats condensed into 12 months and you won’t have a summer to do an internship.  I am not so sure you’ll have that much time for relationship building and networking and doing all those extracurriculars that MBA’s are supposed to do.

Anyways, this is for down the line, need to get my work experience first - but yeah, looks like I will be doing a conventional 2 year program down the road.

Carnegie Mellon’s von liebig Center

Posted on July 24th, 2007 in Other by Warren

Here is Carnegie Mellon’s von Liebig-type Center. It’s called CTTEC.  They had a great year last year with something like 14 startups spun out of there? That is very impressive.  Only if we were able to work more closely with our Tech Transfer office. =T

UCSD School Of Business

Posted on July 23rd, 2007 in Career Development by Warren

So evidently, UCSD has a school of business these days. I had no clue till I got there. It’s obviously geared towards technical people since SD is a IT/Biotech hotbed. I’ve actually met a few of the MBA candidates there.. Its called the RADY School.

Rady

I don’t think I would go there though. Even thought I’m a bioE grad student, I basically do the same stuff right now that a MBA candidate would be doing..

Anyways, here’s the Rady blog.

Marketing Simpsons

Posted on July 20th, 2007 in Other by Warren

No clue how the Simpsons movie is going to be, but they’re doing a pretty awesome job of getting everyone psyched about it with the Quick-E Marts and now this. This site is pretty interesting…. now only if I could get it to work…..
