PhDs and finding yourself

Posted on September 4th, 2007 in Career Development, Personal Development by Warren

A lot of people deal with their Quarter Life Crisis by stockpiling advanced degrees.  While advanced degrees are almost a necessity these days (B.S.’s are basically high school diplomas…..epecially B.S.’s from middle tier programs.), think carefully about your motivations for pursuing the degree.  A PhD behind your name sounds awesome, but unless you’re in love with the subject or you know exactly how this PhD will fit into your future career plans, you might be better off doing something else with your time.  In fact, many grad students end up doing a lot of something-else-besides-their-thesis in grad school. See what Paul has to say about the subject of PhD’s and career/personal development.
