Multi-tasking

Posted on October 31st, 2007 in Career Development by Warren

This quarter has been quite hectic..  In addition to finishing up my last few classes, I’ve been working 2 part time jobs and been interviewing for full times after I graduate.  It’s pretty stressful juggling all of these things at once. Sometimes its hard to maintain a focus on any one of them. I know for sure my school grades will take a hit this quarter, but the material I’ve been learning is still interesting. Its also interesting how my perspective on grades and school work has changed over the years - especially recently since I have other priorities that dwarf GPA.

Yeah, I am busy and preoccupied at times, but I see it as making up for lost time.  I didn’t have any work experience coming out of undergrad, so now I have to work extra hard to make up for it.

Chinese bubble?

Posted on October 29th, 2007 in Finance by Warren

Some facts about the Chinese stock market from Paul’s site:

  1. While the Shanghai Composite is up a fairly staggering 158% year-to-date — and 188% over the last five years — the five-year return works out to an annualized return of 13%. Granted, that isn’t tiny, but it also isn’t exactly daunting either. With profits doubling in many Chinese companies year-over-year, and with the the Shanghai Composite having been flat from 2002 to late 2006, it can, perhaps, be forgiven for a playing a little catch-up, can’t it?
  2. China Life, PetroChina Co., China Mobile Ltd., Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Ltd. and China Petroleum and Chemical Corp. are now in the list of the world’s 10 biggest companies by market value. Only two of those are in the top 50 by sales.

No school all week

Posted on October 24th, 2007 in Other by Warren

October 23, 2007

Dear UC San Diego Campus Community and Friends,

After careful consideration and conferring with the Office of the
President and our Academic Affairs colleagues, we have decided to
cancel classes for the rest of the week. Due to the continuing
uncertainty of the fires and extremely poor air quality, we want
to put all precautionary measures in place. Many of our faculty
and staff and their families have been directly affected, and we
are certain that classes and standard operations will not be available
at full capacity this week.

Most non-essential personnel are asked not to come to campus, but
we know in some cases there are those who might be needed. All
personnel considering coming onto campus, should check with your
department.
