“those in their early 20s spend more time alone than anyone except the elderly.” - Boston Globe

That came as quite a shock to me. At first glance that fact sounds kind of ridiculous. How could 20 somethings be lonely? We’ve got buddies, we go partying, we do all that fun stuff, right? Then I started looking at my own life and it started to make some more sense… I am down in SD. Far away from friends, significant other, family and yes, even pets… This career thing IS making me lonely. I look around and I realize that I know more 50 somethings than 20 somethings…. And it does seem like this is only going to continue. It’s so competitive these days that you have to be flexible and willing to do anything, anywhere to expose yourself to opportunities. Then I look around at some other people - all the same. Almost everyone I know pursuing their career “ambitions” is toughing it out somewhere they wouldn’t call home. So why is that?

“They maintain that there’s a phase of life — quarter-life — which, like adolescence and midlife, has its own set of challenges and characteristics. People get married later and have more transient careers than before. They are in debt longer, sometimes in school longer. The early to late 20s represents a time of extreme instability, according to the experts. ”

Yes, you read that. Early to LATE twenties…. Extreme instability….. Can’t wait.

Anyways, if you’re 20 something and wondering why you eat alone so often, don’t worry about it. I do it too.
